Time Wave: Following the Apparent Dynamic of Earth Events

According to Terence McKenna,"the Newtonian-Einsteinian description of nature is the Ur myth of our civilzation. Yet, it is at variance with perceived experience in an important area - the temporal dimension. Time, for Newton, was represented by a line; it was pure duration, a domain necessary for the description of events. Einstein added the possibility of slight and smooth curvature of the the space-time continuum. Both points of view overlook a property of reality -- connectedness, which we encounter at the very beginning of the universe and which is conserved and concentrated throughout the entire subsequent history of space and time.

In seeking the basis for a new model of time outside the "pure duration" model of Western science, McKenna examined Eastern approaches that seemed more in tune with subjective intuitions and immediate felt experience. The experience that we have of time is much more closely related to the description that we inherit from a tradition such as Taoism. Indeed, the Tao Te Ching opens with the observation that "The Way that can be told of is not an unvarying way."

The idea that time is experienced as a series of identifiable elements in flux is highly developed in the I Ching , which offers a temporal model which is a well developed alternative to the "flat duration" point of view. The I Ching views time as a finite number of distinct and irreducible elements in the same way that the chemical elements compose the world of matter. For the Taoist sages of pre-Han China, time was composed of 64 irreducible elements, and it is upon these elements that a new model of time is built -- one that incorporates the idea of conservation of novelty and recognizes time as a process of becoming.

The earliest arrangement of the hexagrams of the I Ching is the King Wen Sequence. It was this sequence that was chosen as a possible basis for the new model of the relationship of time to the ingression and conservation of novelty. Using standard techniques, combined with supercomputer power, the hierarchy present in the King Wen sequence was mathematically collapsed into a self-similar or fractal curve that could be used to map the unfolding of temporal variables and their resonances on all levels of duration. A computer program was eventually generated by Peter Meyer that would allow easy manipulation of the fractal timewave and quick comparisons of various locations within it. Looking at the timewave graphs (similar to the "gif" illustration on the timewave menus), the line that is being portrayed concerns novelty. As the line moves down, novelty is increasing. Upward movement indicates a decrease in novelty (that occurs during the formation of "structures", whether sociological, geological or cosmological),

Novelty is a primary term necessary to a description of any temporal system much in the same way that spin, velocity, and angular momentum are primary terms necessary to the description of any physical system. Synonyms for novelty are [1] Degree of connectedness and [2] Complexity. Novelty portrays a situation of greater connectedness or complexity, while entropy is the opposite of these qualities; it is less organized, less integrated and less complex.

Creativity is the principle of novelty, and it introduces novelty into the content of the many. Within the time wave, a variety of resonance points are recognized. Resonance can be thought of as areas of the wave that are graphically the same as the wave at some other point within the wave, yet differing from it through having different quantified values. It is implicit within this theory that the notion of duration is like a "tone", in that one must assign a moment at which the damped oscillation is finally quenched and ceases. In this light, December 22, 2012 seemed to be the "best fit" configuration with regard to the recorded facts of the ebb and flow of historical advance into connectedness. This same date was later found to be that assigned to the end of the Mayan calendar.

Typically, the time wave (which in reality is a bi-directional, tri-layer fractal compression wave) portrays a situation where "structure" is created, producing an underlying sub-structure, as it were, that becomes less organized until the point where it surfaces and undermines the overlying structure, producing novelty and connectedness on an instantaneous basis which is temporally recognized as an "event horizon" involving a "plunge into novelty." Viewing the time wave, it immediately becomes apparent that there are 6 very large plunges into novelty between Jan 1, 1996 and Dec 22, 2012 that far out-shadow all the rest. The first occurs near the end of February 1996 and ends around the first week of May 1996, wherein a structure-building (that is self-undermining) process begins again. Consult the long-term discussion page for a complete analytical overview of the prime structure/novelty event horizon dates, as well as periods of novelty and structure building.

The Time Wave and Historical Event Periods

If we demand of the theory a prediction as to the moment of the elusive Big Bang then a likely candidate would be 22 billion years in the past. A value that is at variance with the current debate on the issue. This is currently a lively area of debate and uncertainty concerning this value allows Timewave Zero to offer a prediction based the unique assumptions of the theory.

NO REASON not to open with the big picture as far as the earth is concerned. This family snapshot is of a span of 7 billion years, a period of time greater than the age of the earth. The now well documented collision of a Mars sized object with the primordial earth which caused the accretion of the moon shows as a very dramatic plunge into novelty. Life's emergence almost immediately afterwards in geological time is also in good agreement with the wave.

The ebb and flow of earth's biota has been driven and occasionally interrupted by large scale extinction events. The most recent of these occurred at the KT boundary with the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

Here is a view of the last 65 million years, a period of time that saw the evolution of the mammals and the eventual emergence of the higher primates. At this scale the rise of Homo sapiens occupies only a small but highly novel part of the picture.

The last ten million years is the time span in which the emergence of humanity and our recent ancestors occurred.

The last 50,000 years show a dramatic ebb and flow of circumstances as novelty, in the form of new behaviors and new technologies, makes itself felt. Following the last melting of the glaciers some 17,000 years ago the descent into novelty appears almost uninterrupted at this scale.

Here human history, from the building of the Great Pyramid in 2790 BC until 2012 AD is contrasted with the length of time during which human beings have been using fire and perhaps language.

This graph makes clear that the Golden Age of Greece, occurring in a general ambience of great novelty nevertheless appears as an even deeper acceleration of the novelty of cultural tendencies already in play. Buddha, Mencius, Confucius, Lao-Tzu & Ezekial were also novel personalities that flourished during this same well defined period.

This is a dramatic demonstration of the power of the theory to anticipate historical events. Every major episode of great novelty since the birth of the Prophet Mohammed appears in its proportional importance here. It is clear that with striking accuracy the Timewave correctly predicts the ebb and flow of historical vicissitude over the most recent 1500 years.

The 1960's represented the decade of the great turning point in Twentieth Century history. The technologies and social movements of the '60s are clearly shown to be responsible for the cascade into deeper novelty that characterized the decades that follow those tumultuous times.

Resonances are basic to the theory of the timewave. Here is a tantalizing one, perhaps a suggestion that a future US presidential election will be fortuitously in direct resonance with a major historical event of major consequences in the past.

Here are a series of interesting direct resonances. The explosion of new life forms in the Cambrian, the rise of  christianity and the murder of Anwar Sadat are in perfect resonance.

Current Time Wave and Synchronous Event Periods

Note Oct-Nov 2004 nodal point. Election Period Events end the long descent from the peak at June/July 2004 (Major Events) and another point of change/novelty in continuum which could denote Major Events beginning in the Fall of 2004 into 2005, with another peak in the fall of 2005

The most basic explanation of the analysis is that the timewave from 1996 to 2012 was analyzed using the Timewave Zero program, which was written from an algorithm gained by a supercomputer analysis of the I Ching probabilty grid. The actual timewave is a bi-directional tri-level fractal waveform exhibiting peaks and valleys, which indicate both structure-breaking and novelty-making event horizons, respectively. It has been analyzed and compared with real-time events as assessed at + or - 3 days accuracy. However, as you pull back fractally and examine a larger portion of the waveform at once, the results become more universally applicable. An experimental cross-plot of major worldwide earthquakes, for example, illustrated that each of them fell on a timewave peak. Although we cannot tell what the event is, we can tell the time period in which it occurs. The following are the results of a 1996-2012 analysis indicating the peaks (structure-breaking event horizons) and valleys (novelty-making event horizons):
