Commentary: "Oslo Police Conducted Bombing Exercise Days Before 'Terrorist' Blast" [07/23/11] "In yet another example of how almost every major terror event is accompanied by a security drill focused around the same scenario, Oslo police were conducting a bombing exercise at a location near the Oslo Opera House just 48 hours before a terrorist blast hit a government building in the Norwegian capital. According to the translated version of an Aftenposten report, “Anti-terror police fired explosive charges at a training center in Oslo, two hundred meters from the Opera, but forgot to notify the public.” The exercise occurred on Wednesday and revolved around anti-terror units attacking a disused building at the edge of Bjørvika pier with bombs and firearms. “The men lowered themselves down from the roof and in through the window that had just been blown out, while they fired hand their weapons,” states the report, noting that the exercise was “dramatic,” produced “violent bangs,” and was watched by spectators at the nearby Opera House. A video of the drill that accompanies the story shows police scaling the side of a building with an explosion going off below them before they enter the window and start firing. Police had to publicly apologize today for not informing the public about the exercise. Greece: "Mass Rioting, Civil Unrest In Greece As Economists Warn Of Global ‘Armageddon Scenarios’" [06/17/11] "As protesters continue to run riot in the streets, economists are warning that the whole of Europe and by extension, the rest of the world could face financial Armageddon should Greece default on its debt, in the absence of a second bailout. Financial experts are warning of a ‘Lehman Moment’ as the European markets are beginning to show signs of unraveling in the wake of the Greek crisis. “The markets have moved from simply pricing in a high probability of a Greek debt default to looking at a scenario of it becoming disorderly and of contagion spreading to other economies like Portugal, like Ireland, and maybe Spain, Italy and Belgium.” a former UK Treasury official told Bloomberg news. Many European countries and banks currently hold billions in Greek debt, meaning that a Greek default will act like a virus throughout Europe.  According to the Bank for International Settlements, Spanish banks currently hold $600 million in Greek debt, Italian banks hold $2.6 billion, UK banks hold $3.2 billion, French banks hold $19.8 billion, German banks hold $26.3 billion and other Eurozone countries hold a combined total of around $15.7 billion in Greek debt. US banks also hold $1.8 billion in Greek debt and Japanese banks hold $500 million in Greek debt. The euro has declined by more than 2 percent against the already vastly devalued dollar within the past two days. Equities declined around the world, while corporate bond protection costs soared to their highest level since January. There is now an estimated 78 percent chance that Greece will not pay its debts. Four of Greece’s largest banks have been downgraded by Standard & Poor’s, while Moody’s Investors Service said it may downgrade BNP Paribas SA and two other big French banks owing to the amount of Greek debt they hold. "European Parliament Spent £600,000 On Six Body Scanners That Were Never Used" [03/14/11] "The European Parliament spent £600,000 on six body scanners that were never used because MEPs argued it would be an infringement of privacy. The body scanners, bought in 2005 at a cost of £100,000 each, are "rotting" in the basement of the building in Brussels and have never been used. When the scanners, which create an image of a person's nude body, were eventually delivered to the Parliament in the autumn of 2005 MEPs objected to them being used in the building on privacy grounds. Nikki Sinclair, a British independent MEP, said the Parliament tried to sell the machines but failed to do so. They are now so old that they are considered to be technically out of date and may be scrapped altogether. "These machines have been left to rot on pallets in a disused garage in the depths of the parliament building," she said.
